SAN JOSE — How would you like to have a shirt that measures your heart rate, or a shoe that keeps track of your steps?

All sorts of wearable technology are on display this week in San Jose where dozens of vendors have brought their latest inventions to the Medical Wearables Conference.


Mike Wagner, chief technology officer with Butler Technologies was showing off a pair of shorts that measure muscle activity. It's useful not just for athletes, he said, but also patients. 

"Those have really gained traction in health and fitness," he said. "Now they're starting to go into the medical field for patient monitoring."

There were sensors that record data from hands, feet and a variety of other body parts. One display featured a heater to insert in jackets. 

There are growing concerns about exposing our bodies to too many devices. Recent medical recommendations say that cellphones should not be carried in pockets and kept an armslength away while sleeping. 

The industry is trying to lower human exposure to electromagnetism, according to Santech CTO Steve Groothuis.

The Medical Wearables Conference continues through Thursday.
