DISCOVERY BAY — A Discovery Bay mom is getting support from families around the Bay Area and the country after she refused to remove the blue lights in front of her home.
Lisa McBride has displayed the lights throughout April for Autism Awareness month, but the homeowners association in her gated community threatened to fine her unless she replaced them with white lights.
As the mother of a 19-year-old son with autism, McBride has been shining the lights for years. Her advocacy extends to her personal style — her clothing, nail polish and ring all show her colorful support for raising awareness about autism.
This was the first time that she ran into opposition from the HOA.
"He likes it," she said. "I think it makes him feel included."
Next year, the lights will be back, McBride said.
"To be honest, by the end of April I am sick of blue. I don't even want to put on a pair of jeans," McBride said. "But I can take it off on May 1 and my son can't autism off. It's his for life."
