SAN FRANCISCO —A body of a woman was discovered buried in the sand at Fort Funston on Monday morning by hikers, according to authorities

There is the possibility that the hikers found the remains of Kyra Sunshine Scarlet who was buried and presumed dead when a dune collapsed at the park on February 22.

Relatives of Scarlet were brought to the beach this morning to possibly identify her. Authorities have not yet revealed if they confirmed that Scarlet has been found.

"The identity and cause of death are still under investigation," park police for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area said.

Scarlet and a friend were walking uphill from the beach with a dog when the cliff gave way, sending tons of sand, dirt and debris cascading onto the beach. The other woman and dog were rescued, but crews of firefighters frrantically digging for hours could not find Scarlet.

The search had been called off when recent storms made the ground unstable for workers and their equipment.
