Officials have postponed Cal's football game against USC, previously scheduled for Saturday at Berkeley's Memorial Stadium, after more players tested positive for COVID-19.

Saturday's game had already hung in the balance. But after testing confirmed more of Cal's football players tested positive for the virus, the schools delayed the matchup on Tuesday. Cal will instead host USC on Dec. 4.

"It couldn't be any more confusing during these times where you're trying to figure out how to do the right thing and what is the right thing," Knowlton said in a press conference on Tuesday. "I applaud our student-athletes for being vocal and wanting to know what’s going on. The bottom line for us is that (Berkeley health officials) gave us recommendations and we implemented those recommendations to keep our kids safe."

Cal was missing several players for its game Saturday at Arizona. Despite estimating its team is 99% vaccinated, two dozen Cal players tested positive for the coronavirus even before last Saturday's game. That number grew, forcing this weekend's postponement.

"Due to additional impact on specific position groups, we have decided to postpone Saturday's game," the statement read. "We have had multiple COVID-19 positives within our program, and we are taking every step we can to mitigate the spread and protect the greater community."

Knowlton said in a press conference on Tuesday that symptomatic players have been tested throughout the season, as have asymptomatic players when contact tracing has required it.
