1 dead in fiery big-rig crash on Richmond-San Rafael bridge

One person has died in a fiery crash on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge that caused traffic delays Wednesday night.

According to KPIX, a big-rig and smaller vehicle crashed around 7 p.m. while heading eastbound from Marin County to Richmond.

California Highway Patrol told the station that a fire broke out in the semi-truck after the fatal collision. The big-rig driver was able to escape, but the driver of the smaller vehicle became trapped and died.

All eastbound lanes of I-580 were closed following the crash, causing a massive back up of traffic as commuters attempted to cross the bridge after work.

As of 10:15 p.m., one lane was opened for traffic when Caltrans officials announced that the bridge was safe and secure. The second and third lanes of the bridge remained closed until 11:57 p.m. due to previously scheduled road work.

All lanes of the bridge have since been reopened. No further information about the cause of the crash was released.

KCBS Radio has reached out to California Highway Patrol, but has not yet heard back.
