Two boats crashed into one another while out on the water at 2:10 p.m. Thursday afternoon, Coast Guard Petty Officer Taylor Bacon told KCBS Radio Friday morning.
When the Coast Guard received the report, they sent one lifeboat and one small boat from the Golden Gate posting to assist.
Both the San Francisco Police Department and San Francisco Fire Department also responded to the scene, he said. SFPD received a report of the incident just 10 minutes after the Coast Guard.
One person, driving a 25-foot center console boat, typically used as a fishing boat collided with a sailboat on the water near the area of Harding Rock. Four passengers were in the other boat.
The person from the first vessel was thrown into the water, and the passengers in the other boat retrieved them before the Coast Guard arrived.
"Witnesses performed a water rescue and began rending air," said SFPD spokesperson Officer Kathryn Winters in a statement to KCBS Radio. "Medical attention was summoned and, in spite of life saving efforts by bystanders and medical personnel, the victim succumbed to their injuries at the scene."
The other four people involved were unharmed in the incident.
Investigators from the Traffic Collision Investigations Unit are investigating the collision.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
