A Santa Cruz County high school senior was stabbed to death on Tuesday and two of his classmates have been arrested on murder charges, according to authorities.

Deputies responded to a call at 2:20 p.m. and found a 17-year-old student on the campus of Aptos High School suffering from stab wounds. He was air lifted to a nearby trauma center, where he succumbed to his injuries and died.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown and remained under that state until 5:30 p.m. while officers searched the campus and conducted interviews.

Police arrested two students, one a freshman, the other a senior, who were then booked on murder charges at the Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall, Sheriff Jim Hart said at a press conference Tuesday night.

An investigation is ongoing. Officials noted that they’re aware cell phone camera footage of the incident exists and ask anybody either with knowledge or access to the video to come forward. Anybody who filmed or witnessed the crime will not face criminal charges, Hart said.

"We know this is a difficult time for the family and friends of the victim," the sheriff’s office said through a release. "Our thoughts are with all of those affected at this time."

A district crisis intervention team will provide crises and grief counseling services to students and school personnel on Wednesday and Thursday.

Anyone with further information about the case is asked to call Detective Burnett at 831-454-7722.
