At around 2 p.m., a one alarm fire broke out on the third floor of 1000 Howard St., the San Francisco Fire Department reported. Smoke poured out of an apartment window as residents stood on the fire escape waiting for help.

Nine people were injured, five of which were taken to the hospital, and eight cats and dogs were rescued.

"Good news everyone and every pet will be okay," the department tweeted after containing the fire.
