3 women killed in Amtrak train crash identified by Contra Costa County coroner

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – The three people killed in a fatal collision between an Amtrak train and a car in Contra Costa County on Sunday have officially been identified by the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office.

The victims of Sunday's accident were Mercedes Regalado, 51, of Brentwood, Maria Nieves, 72, and Julia Mondragon, 41, both of Dixon, Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Deputy Ronald Westhorpe told KCBS Radio.

The victims were inside a four-door sedan on a dirt road at the 3000 block of Orwood Road.

Their next of kin have been notified of their deaths, Westhorpe said.

The accident occurred at around 1 p.m. on Sunday on a private, agricultural crossing on the train tracks.

Two others in the car, a man and a child, were seriously injured in the collision and have since been taken to separate hospitals for treatment. They have not yet been identified by officials.

No one on the train was injured in the collision.

The crash is under investigation by the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office and BNSF Railway.
