On Sunday, officers responded to an armed carjacking near the intersection of South 7th Street and East Reed Street around 1 a.m., the San Jose Police Department said. Four male suspects wearing masks approached someone sitting in their vehicle and put a gun to their head demanding that the victim relinquish their car and personal property. The victim obeyed the order and the suspects drove away in the stolen car.

About an hour later the police found the stolen car with the suspects inside. The vehicle sped off and officers started to chase after the car but stopped because the suspects were driving recklessly, police said. A San Jose Police Department helicopter found and followed the car and watched it lose control and collide with the center median near Coleman Avenue and Highway 87, police said in the release.

The suspect driver ran off but was arrested a short time later, officers reported. The other three suspects were taken into custody by officers at the scene of the crash. Officers recovered a loaded privately made firearm from the car.

The four suspects were identified as teenagers and booked into juvenile hall. Detectives were able to recognize three of the suspects from prior armed robberies and carjacking's in San Jose. Those three suspects were booked in March of 2022 for those incidents.

Three of the suspects were on "active searchable probation" and one of them was assigned an ankle monitor.

Anyone with information about this case or a similar incident is asked to contact Detective Marte at 408-277-4166.
