SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Some 50 passengers were safely evacuated from a derailed BART train in the East Bay on Tuesday after the record-breaking temperatures caused a malfunction.

The heat wave on Tuesday caused a "curve" in the rail between the Pleasant Hill and Concord stations, according to BART spokesperson Chris Filippi in an emailed statement to KCBS Radio.

The Contra Costa Fire Protection District tweeted at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday that each of the approximately 50 passengers had been safely removed from a train that derailed earlier that night, with as many as six people sustaining minor injuries.

Contra Costa Fire spokesperson Steve Hill told KCBS Radio's Jeff Bell and Patti Reising that one person was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. A BART spokesperson said the rider complained of back pain.

BART's automated Twitter feed posted at 5:37 p.m. that there was a major delay on the Antioch line due to "an equipment problem." Twelve minutes later, the agency tweeted that it paused service between Pleasant Hill and Concord in the Antioch and San Francisco International Airport directions.

At 6:00 p.m., BART's main Twitter feed acknowledged "a reported derailment on a train." Twenty minutes later, the agency said 50 riders were "safely evacuated and removed," with no injuries reported yet.

Contra Costa County buses No. 11 and No. 14 were dispatched to take riders between the two affected stations throughout Tuesday evening, accepting BART tickets as fares, while repairs were underway.

According to Filippi, 70 BART workers were on the scene to move the derailed train out of the way and to repair the trackway, and continued to work throughout the night to restore service.

As of just before 5 a.m. on Wednesday, single-track service was restored between the stations in both the Antioch and SFO directions, and the rest of the Yellow Line has normal service, according to a post on BART's Twitter page.
