A 63-year-old man is recovering after he was hit by a school bus full of children while walking across the street in Fremont on Thursday morning.
At around 7:35 a.m., a school bus turning onto Walnut Avenue from Mission Boulevard struck the man crossing the street within a designated crosswalk, California Highway Patrol reported.
The man was hit at low speeds resulting in minor injury, authorities stated. He was released at the scene.
No children on the bus or the bus driver were injured. "We are glad that all parties involved are free of any serious injuries," CHP said.
CHP took the opportunity to remind motorists and pedestrians of important safety tips via Twitter.
"Motorists are expected to watch for people walking and people bicycling, obey all speed limits, avoid distraction, and know the laws regarding pedestrian right-of-way," officials stated. "Be prepared to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks (marked or unmarked)."
"Pedestrians: Be careful at intersections where drivers may fail to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians while turning onto another street," they advised. "Before stepping in front of a car, make eye contact with the driver."
