Seventy percent of respondents in the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce’s annual poll said quality of life in the city has declined.

The chamber conducted its “City Beat Poll” from May 25 to 31, with 88% of respondents saying homelessness had worsened and 80% said they believed crime has increased.

The poll was based on comments submitted by 520 San Francisco residents, all of whom are registered voters. Residents responded through hybrid telephone, internet and text in both English and Chinese, according to the chamber.

Utilizing data from SF311, the chamber also created a dashboard gathering information on eight sources of residents’ complaints, including graffiti, overflowing trash cans, broken storefront windows and theft.

Reports of broken storefront windows went up 40% in 2021 from 2019, according to the chamber.

"This is a particularly concerning statistic, as broken windows are cited by small businesses as a major financial burden," the chamber said.
