More than 80% of AC Transit employees are vaccinated and proof of vaccinations continue to be sent in to the administrative offices, the release stated.
The transportation agency voted on the vaccine mandate in December of 2021 and set March 17 as the deadline to be inoculated. AC Transit staff was required to get the three FDA authorized vaccines within a 60-day period and are not given the option for scheduled testing, the release said.
"Our Board of Directors wants to ensure a healthier workforce and build a safer workplace, and through its vote, believes the COVID-19 vaccines provide our transit district a critical path forward," Michael Hursh AC Transit General Manager said in a release.
The vaccine requirement does allow employees to submit a religious or medical exemption. Those who do not receive a COVID-19 vaccine or an exemption will be notified of job termination as early as Friday March 18, the release said.
AC Transit wants the community and riders to be aware that the new vaccine policy may result in a loss of employees that could affect service, the agency said. Riders will be notified about delays or service modifications.
