An expansion plan for Oakland’s AC Transit system is expected to launch on Sunday.

In preparation for employees to return to in person work and for students to return to schools, the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District announced on Wednesday that they will be increasing bus services starting on August 8.

"AC Transit literally moved the Bay Area before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic carrying the third-largest ridership in the region, primarily low-income people of color," said Board President Elsa Ortiz.

The restoration and expansion plan will include resuming bus service to schools in Alameda and Contra Costa counties as well as various Transbay bus lines, Early Bird Express bus lines and overnight 800 bus lines.

AC Transit has implemented COVID-19 safeguards to prepare for the increase in passengers, including antiviral cleaning, advanced HVAC air filtration, the continued availability of free face coverings and hand sanitizers onboard and expanded contactless payments features.

Officials anticipate that the service will continue to progressively expand over the next 12-18 months as ridership rebounds, following appropriate COVID-19 guidelines.
