The ongoing effort to clean up unhealthy air in West Oakland continues, with steps being taken to phase out old, polluting equipment at the Port of Oakland.
Between highway traffic and port traffic, West Oakland has long suffered from air pollution. So, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District is doing something about it.
So far, nearly 30 old engines have been replaced in gantry cranes and tug boats, and many local schools now have MERV 16 air filters.
However, Air District Board Member John Bauters noted that as these neighborhoods get healthier, gentrification becomes a concern.
"Black, Indigenous and other people of color roll up their sleeves to do the work to actually bring change to their communities, and then are actually priced out of them," he told KCBS Radio.
That's one of the reasons the agency continues to hold community meetings with residents to find out what their needs are before making changes.
