California Highway Patrol officers responded to a call around 4:30 p.m. on a report of a vehicle crash located by the westbound I-580 to the westbound I-80 transition, the CHP's Oakland office wrote in a statement.

A single man was discovered inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound, and had apparently swerved after being shot, crashing into a nearby guardrail, the statement said.

He was transported to a nearby hospital for medical assistance, but succumbed to his injuries.

"We are heartbroken and disturbed by this senseless act of gun violence," the sheriff's department wrote in a tweet, along with a video of the recruit’s body being transported in a solemn procession, observed by others in the department.

The CHP's Golden Gate office is heading the investigation into the shooting. Authorities have asked that anyone with information about the incident call (707) 917-4491.
