Alameda, Santa Cruz and Solano counties are moving into the red tier of reopening.
The state updated its tier assignments Tuesday morning which saw five counties move from purple to red: Alameda, Santa Cruz, Butte, Calaveras, Imperial and Solano. Plumas and Mariposa have also moved from red to the less restrictive orange tier, which represents a "moderate" level of risk.
For the first time in months, a California county is in the yellow or "minimal" risk tier after Alpine was upgraded.
The changes mean that Alameda and Solano counties can reopen businesses including indoor dining, indoor gyms, movie theaters, shopping centers and museums, plus expand capacity at businesses that have already been open.
Solano County officials confirmed to KCBS Radio that more businesses and activities will be able to expand capacity or resume operations in accordance with the change starting on Wednesday.
Contra Costa and Sonoma counties are now the only counties in the Bay Area still in the most restrictive purple tier.
