The Novato Police Department arrested Conn Michael Prescott, a 61-year-old resident of Emerald Lake Hills in San Mateo County, on Saturday morning after he allegedly started fires in one business, broke into two others and vandalized two Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit buildings in the city.
Novato police arrested Prescott on four felony vandalism charges, three counts of felony burglary and misdemeanor charges of arson and obstructing or resisting a peace officer on Saturday morning, according to Marin County Sheriff's Office records. Police alleged in a press release that he caused $300,000 worth of damage to a dentist's office, restaurant, another unnamed business and the two SMART buildings.
Officers responded to a report of a fire inside a Roblar Drive business at 5:44 a.m. on Saturday, which investigators determined was started intentionally. Police said the responding officers found another area of the building burned where a fire had been extinguished.
The officers then learned of the alleged SMART building vandalism, according to the Novato Police Department. Later that morning, officers responded to a reported break-in at a restaurant on Ignacio Boulevard, where witnesses said they saw a person "damaging the front window" before going into a dentist's office next door. The witnesses told the police that they believed the person was damaging the office’s dental equipment, walls and windows.
Police said the responding officers found Prescott when they entered the building, and the 61-year-old allegedly refused to leave the dentist’s office before he "then attempted to run away." Officers reviewing surveillance footage from the Roblar Drive business and the SMART buildings "determined that Prescott matched the suspect description" before arresting him, according to the Novato Police Department.
Neither the Marin County Sheriff's Office nor Marin County Superior Court records listed a scheduled arraignment for Prescott, who has been held in custody since his booking on Saturday afternoon. The Marin County District Attorney’s Office didn’t respond to KCBS Radio's request for comment prior to publication on Tuesday afternoon.
