The protestors were able to elude security and confront staff inside the hospital's Women's Option Center at about 10:45 a.m., authorities said. The anti-abortion groups claiming responsibility for the incident – Anti-Abortion San Francisco, Survivors and PAAU – posted video of the protest to YouTube.
The footage shows four protestors chanting at doctors and nurses as staff stands behind a protective wall of San Francisco Sheriff's deputies. The protesters were apparently able to elude security when one of them posed as patient seeking emotional and medical support.
As she was being led into the facility, other protestors stormed their way through the open door.
One protester followed instructions from authorities and left, while three other protesters – who refused to leave – were escorted off the premises and cited for trespassing, authorities said.
They were later released. One protester was charged with resisting arrest.
No injuries were reported.
According to a staff security alert obtained by KCBS Radio, hospital officials are accusing one of the groups involved in Monday's incident of also vandalizing artwork located outside of the facility "with red substance, string and labels." That incident happened late Sunday, per the email. Hospital officials plan to add security cameras with monitoring capabilities inside the clinic, install computerized visitor management systems and change entrances "to mitigate piggybacking," as was the case on Monday.
The San Francisco Sheriff's Department is working with the city's Department of Public Health to review the incident.
In a joint statement, they told KCBS Radio: "People have the right to express their First Amendment rights, but in an acceptable way that respects other individuals and their privacy."
