Former Giants slugger Barry Bonds was back at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Friday, but he was helping the hungry, not playing baseball.
As cars lined up in the parking lot, a crew of volunteers with the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank was ready to distribute boxes of fruit, vegetables and proteins.
Among those volunteers was Bonds, who said he’s honored to give back and inspire his kids to do the same.
“I’m old now - well, getting there - and this is their time to shine,” he said. “This is what they want to do, and they’re at a point in their lives where these contributions mean a lot to them.”
Fellow volunteer Ronny was excited that Bonds was there.
“I’ve been watching him since I was a youngster, so it’s really nice to have him help,” he told KCBS Radio.
Food bank Executive Director Tanis Crosby said the organization expected to serve hundreds of families at the drive-thru event alone.
“We are so focused on our mission and serving our community right now more than ever before,” she said. “We’re just focused on making sure that the 1 in 5 members of our community who need our help are getting our help, and we know that the need is growing.”

Bonds also donated $15,000 to the food bank from his family foundation.
