The Bay Area Air Management District issued a Spare the Air alert for Thursday and Friday due to heavy wildfire smoke continuing to linger across the region, the agency announced.
Winds earlier in the week pushed smoke from massive wildfires throughout the Sacramento Valley into the Bay Area, originally prompting the agency to issue an air advisory through Friday and it maintained as late as Wednesday that it did not expect to issue a Spare the Air alert.
However, that advisory was upgraded to a Spare the Air Alert late Thursday morning as air quality levels exceeded federal standards and are considered "unhealthy for sensitive groups."
According to the agency's website, when Spare the Air alerts are issued, "Bay Area residents should consider limiting outdoor activities." It's also recommended that residents take alternative means of transportation, such as "public transit, carpooling, or biking."
In addition, wood burning is banned the next two days while the alert in in effect.
