PG&E restored power late Wednesday night to over half of Northern California residents impacted by its latest Public Safety Power Shutoff.

The utiility said it expects "essentially" all of the 48,000 customers affected to have their power back by late Thursday evening.

The company shut off electricity Tuesday night for residents in parts of 18 Northern California counties due to dry and gusty offshore winds that elevated the risk of wildfires across the region.

As of 10 p.m. Wednesday, approximately 27,000 customers, 55% of those affected, had their power restored after the utility received the "weather all clears" in most areas.

Some residents in Alameda, Contra Costa, Sierra, Trinity and Yuba counties were originally supposed to have their power cut off, however "changing weather conditions" allowed PG&E to remove them from the scope of impact.

The company said Butte, Shasta and Tahama Counties, whose populations were among the largest customer bases impacted by the shutoffs, experienced wind gusts as high as 56 miles per hour.
