That's according to 50 Best, which included Oakland's Friends and Family (No. 33) and San Francisco's ABV (No. 39) in its inaugural list of the 50 best bars in North America on Tuesday.
Blake Sondel Cole, Friends and Family's owner, posted a picture on the bar's Instagram of herself and her mother celebrating on the red carpet of Tuesday night's ceremony in New York.
Friends and Family, which opened in 2020, earned praise from 50 Best for its "trim but stellar" cocktail menu with a dozen drinks and a food menu "perfect for (savory) snacking." Organizers also hailed the bar – which touts itself as proudly woman- and queer-owned – for its monthly shot specials known as "daily affirmations." Friends and Family donates 100% of the special's proceeds to fundraisers for gender-affirming surgery efforts, and its website includes donation links to a number of environmental, racial and social justice initiatives.
The bar, located at 468 25th St. in Oakland, is open Mondays (4-11 p.m.), Wednesdays (4-10 p.m.), Thursdays (4-11 p.m.), Fridays, Saturdays (4-11:30 p.m.) and Sundays (2-9 p.m.).
ABV, a San Francisco Mission District staple since 2014, was highlighted for "presenting a casual outlook on delicious cocktails," on top of "its stellar hamburger and other bar bites." It previously earned a spot on 50 Best's top bars in the world.
Located just a few blocks from Mission Dolores Park at 3174 16th St., ABV is open from 4 p.m. until 2 a.m. everyday, serving food until midnight.
New York's Attaboy earned the No. 1 spot on the list, while Los Angeles' Thunderbolt (No. 9) was deemed the best bar in California.
