Days after the draft opinion first surfaced signaling that the court could be poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, more than a dozen South Bay women leaders gathered to rally for abortion rights and voice their anger.

"People said they were shocked I was not shocked because this has been their plan," San Jose Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren said. "It's the culmination of more than 40 years of the republican party trying to overturn personal liberty for women in this country."

Lofgren was also joined by Congresswoman Anna Eshoo. Together, they called for a renewed effort for the U.S. Senate to pass the "Women's Health Protection Act," a bill that would codify the right to an abortion nationwide.

"I don't think that there has ever been a time that's more urgent for the Senate to act on what the house has sent to it," Eshoo said.

Lofgren said she is not optimistic, but she points out abortion rights enjoy support from a large majority of Americans. She had a message to voters.

"Seventy percent of the people think one thing, and the congress does something else, two things can happen: One, they can be dissuaded from their course, or two, they can be replaced," Lofgren said.
