SAN JOSE (KCBS RADIO) – One sad aftershock of the early COVID-19 lockdown: pet abandonment on a massive scale.

Pet rabbits are no exception.
When the lockdown orders landed, pet ownership went way up.
But as people started heading back out into the world, many have decided that they just don’t have time for their new furry friend anymore.
"Our shelters are getting slammed," said Heather Bechtel, director of The Rabbit Haven, a Northern California rabbit rescue.
She told KCBS Radio groups like hers are facing an overwhelming surge of abandoned bunnies. "They even sometimes leave them in wire cages out in front of the gate," Bechtel said.

Making the problem even worse, rabbits have large litters and can be expensive to spay or neuter.
Bechtel is hoping more community outreach could help owners find better solutions for rabbits needing a home. "There's a lot of options rather than surrendering to the shelters or a rescue."
