A South Bay sex offender who skipped town following his 1993 release from prison has been found living in Florida under an assumed identity.
David Swenson, 53, has been arrested in Spring Hill, Florida for failing to register as a sex offender, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office announced on Wednesday. Officials received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on Tuesday relating to Swenson’s possible location.
Swenson had been living in Florida under the name "Kevin Crowley," authorities said.
Investigators actually made contact with Swenson in 2009, but "the case was abandoned by the court system." He provided the false identity at that time.
When he was arrested this week, Swenson told investigators "he wanted to end his time on the run," saying "he had “been on the run for 21 years" and that he had been living in Spring Hill the entire time.
He admitted to leaving California and failing to register in Florida.
Swenson is listed as an "absconded sex offender" on California’s Sex Offender Registry. He had been convicted of forced rape in 1989 in Santa Clara County. He’s now charged in Florida with failure to register as a sex offender and is being held without bond, as reported by The Mercury News.
