KCBS Radio tried to visit one of the homes on the list, the residence of former Chevron executive, George Kirkland. However, nobody answered when we approached the gate of his Danville estate.
According to East Bay Municipal Utility District, the former vice chairman of Chevron used over 5,200 gallons of water per day last summer, landing him as one of the top 10 most excessive users in the Bay Area – though he did cut his water use by over half since the last drought when he used over 12,000 gallons per day.
Another high profile water waster named was Alamo's Steven Burd, the former CEO of Safeway, who the utility said used over 5,400 gallons a day.
The worst water waster this summer was Tom Seeno, a well known developer in Contra Costa County, who used over 9,000 gallons of water per day at his residence in Alamo.
The average household water use in the Bay Area is around 200 gallons per day.
"If that's the situation and they’re just knowingly overusing water, I think that’s a situation that needs to be addressed," Farrell Scott, who lives in Pleasanton, told KCBS Radio.
She recently switched to drought tolerant landscaping in order to save water during the drought, and, as a result, she "has no lawns."
"I think that everybody needs to be vigilant with the water," she said.
High water users are subject to excessive use penalties if they exceed 1,600 gallons of water per day. The biggest fine levied so far was approximately $1200 dollars over a two-month billing cycle, the Chronicle reported.
