It was after his death that Jane was truly confronted with how many mistakes had been made when Stanford University was being founded, and she was left to pick up the pieces.
In Episode 2 of Bitter Academia, 'Follow the Money' we learn how Leland Stanford used his fortune and his position to make Stanford University a reality – but leaving holes throughout in case the school ultimately failed.
While Jane was not a businessman and had little experience handling these sorts of matters, she rose to the occasion because she had no other choice.
Under her guidance and sacrifices during an economic downturn – selling her own jewels to keep the school afloat – the university survived.
With a taste of authority, Jane began to make more and more decisions that were unpopular with those around her.
Most of all, the man she had entrusted to run the school in her vision, the university's president, David Starr Jordan.
We begin to understand the root of the pair's conflict, and how that conflict will inevitably come to a head right around Jane’s untimely death.
