Many beach-side businesses are in disarray as water continues to flood the coastline and waves push into the town. High winds are causing some swells to reach 30 feet. "Due to enormous waves and high tides, the coast is extraordinarily dangerous today," county officials wrote in a tweet Wednesday morning.
The beach is scattered with debris of fallen trees, branches, seaweed and pieces of the wharf, which was split in half by powerful tidal surges Thursday morning.
"We have all of our public works crews in place to try and get down there and get everything cleaned up as best that we can so we can evaluate the area so we can get our residents and businesses back in there as soon as possible. We have to just make sure that it's safe," said Capitola Police Chief Andrew Dally.
My Thai Beach, an oceanfront restaurant, was just getting ready to make some renovations when the building was severely damaged Wednesday and Thursday. Waves came up through the floorboards and washed in through the windows. Down the street at around 1 p.m., the pressure from the ocean at high tide was shooting water through the drains in the sidewalk., further flooding the village.
The area will need time and patience to fully recover following this storm.
