Stunning video of the Dixie Fire engulfing a camera in the Sierra reveals the power and scope of the one of the largest blazes in California history.

The footage is from a camera owned by the Alert Fire network located within the Sierra Nevada at Indian Ridge, which is on the northeastern edge of the Dixie Fire about 15 miles southeast of Lake Almanor.

The time lapse shows hour long footage, sped up to last only a minute and a half, of flames from the Dixie Fire completely ravaging large colorful green trees before devouring the camera in smoke.

According to the Nevada Seismological Lab’s YouTube page, both the camera and radio equipment survived.

Alert Wildfire, run by The University of Nevada, Reno, University of California San Diego, and University of Oregon, provides access to state-of-the-art Pan-Tilt-Zoom fire cameras and associated tools to help firefighters and first responders on a variety of fronts, and has revealed “critical information for over 1500 fires,” from 2016-2020, the company’s website said.

The Dixie Fire has burned over 200,000 acres as of Tuesday morning, threatening thousands of building and forcing evacuations in Butte and Plumas counties.
