Community leaders in San Francisco celebrated the official grand opening of a park in the Tenderloin on Saturday, appropriately naming it "Safe Passage Park."

After months of planning, the 200 block of Turk St. has been transformed into a first-of-its-kind community space.

"We’re doing it by taking a part of the street," Supervisor Matt Haney explained. "Taking a place that was previously used for parking, and now using it for children and families and seniors to be able to play, enjoy and walk safely."

Safe Passage Park has been open for a few weeks, but community leaders officially celebrated its debut today.

Haney believes the park will now be a multi-use family-friendly neighborhood zone. He hopes it will be an example for other slow street projects in the future.

Haney credits the creation of the park to dedicated community members. Without the help from driven neighbors and the completion of hundreds of surveys, Safe Passage Park may never have gotten its feet off the ground.
