Joseph Canciamilla, a longtime Contra Costa politician, was sentenced earlier this month for nine counts of perjury and grand theft.

Instead of serving his one-year sentence in county jail, he’ll serve his time under electronic home detention at his beachfront condo in Kauai, according to reporting by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Canciamilla was the Contra Costa clerk-recorder until he resigned in 2019 during an investigation into his misuse of campaign funds. He was charged last year with 34 felonies for misusing more than $260,000 in campaign funds and lying about it on campaign disclosure forms.

His plea deal included a sentence of 365 days in jail, but he applied for electronic home detention, which was granted. The probation department is now pursuing an interstate supervision agreement with Hawaii to monitor Canciamilla’s one-year sentence, which could be cut in half for good behavior.

Canciamilla and his wife own a 1,714-foot waterfront condo with 200-square-foot porch at the Makahuena Condo complex at Poipu Beach on the southern tip of Kauai. The unit was assessed at $1.287 million this year.

The $260,000 Canciamilla admitted misusing went for a vacation in Asia, restaurant meals, airfare, repaying a personal loan — and for renovating his Hawaii vacation home, according to the California Fair Political Practices Commission.

Public records show that the Kauai condo is the only property Canciamilla has owned in Hawaii.
