Over 80 students and staff tested positive for COVID-19 in Brentwood and Oakley as schools opened for in-person instruction last week, while nearly 140 students and staff were close contacts of confirmed positive cases in the cities’ elementary and middle schools.
The Brentwood Union School District had 19 confirmed cases, including 17 among students, according to data released Monday morning. Fewer students and staff (56) are close contacts than the district reported last week (57), but 121 students and staff are showing symptoms without having tested positive.
Of those, 117 are students.
The Oakley Union Elementary School District had 16 confirmed positive cases, including 12 students, according to data released Friday night. There are 71 students among the 82 close contacts.
The Liberty Brentwood Union High School District, meanwhile, had 48 confirmed positive cases, including 42 students, according to district data. There are nearly 8,500 students enrolled in the district, meaning 0.4% of enrolled students have tested positive. The district didn't provide data on close contacts.
Within Contra Costa County, 72% of residents aged 12-15 and 82% of residents aged 16-19 have been fully vaccinated. Masks are also required in all public indoor settings, regardless of vaccination status, in the county, and each of the aformentioned districts are following state guidelines requiring masks in schools.
None of the districts require staff to be fully vaccinated, as some others in the Bay Area have started to.
Although 75.4% of eligible Contra Costa County residents have been fully vaccinated, those percentages are currently smaller in Brentwood (69.7%) and Oakley (60.7%), according to county data. Few of the cities’ elementary and middle school students are eligible for the vaccine, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not yet authorized emergency use for children under the age of 12.
