The city's police chief Bill Scott is defending the investigation, urging residents to be patient. There's still very few details about what led to Lee's murder, but the incident has sent shockwaves through the tech industry and the Bay Area as a whole.
Both Elon Musk and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey have spoken out about the stabbing.
"Many people I know have been severely assaulted," Musk wrote in a tweet. "Violent crime in SF is horrific and even if attackers are caught, they are often released immediately."
"Is the city taking stronger action to incarcerate repeat violent offenders?" He asked, tagging San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.
Dorsey, whose company Block owns Cash App, spoke on Lee's passing in a post on the decentralized social media network Nostr.
"It's real. Getting calls. Heartbreaking," Dorsey said. "Bob was instrumental to Square and Cash App. STL guy."
Jake Shields is a former mixed martial arts champion and a friend of Lee. The two were supposed to have dinner Thursday night in Miami.
"He certainly treated everyone good, super generous, just a nice guy, humble too," Shields told KCBS Radio.
The incident has once again put San Francisco's reputation at the forefront of the conversation. Some, like Shields, say it's another example of out of control crime in the city. "I'm just skeptical San Francisco has let itself completely deteriorate," he said. "It's hard to see how it could change."
But others see things differently. Kevin Benedicto is the San Francisco Police Commissioner. He said while it's a tragedy, Lee's stabbing isn't reflective of what's happening in the city. "I find it premature and distasteful to try to fit this horrifying act of violence into a preconceived narrative and use it to advance a political agenda," Benedicto told KCBS Radio.
In a statement, Chief Scott said he won't speculate on the evidence or circumstances of the stabbing, but said officers are working tirelessly on the investigation.
