Fremont was crowned happiest city in the country, edging out San Francisco and San Jose, which finished third and fourth respectively. Columbia, Maryland ranked second and Irvine, California ranked fifth.

Santa Rosa and Oakland were the other Bay Area cities also ranked in the top 20, finishing 14th and 16th respectively.

The outlet compared 182 of the largest U.S. cities, including the 150 most populated and at least two of the most populated in each state, across three dimensions: residents' emotional and physical wellbeing, residents' income and employment, and community and environment.

The site evaluated each city in the aforementioned three categories using 30 metrics which were valued on a 0 to 100 point scale, and calculated a weighted average to determine each city's overall score. The metrics, which the site called "key indicators of happiness," ranged from depression rate to income growth rate to average leisure time spent per day.

Fremont scored the highest in emotional and physical well-being and second in community and environment. Meanwhile, San Francisco scored the highest rating for income and employment.

Despite the Bay Area's strong showing in Wallethub's citywide analysis, California was ranked as the fourth happiest state in the U.S. Utah, Minnesota and Hawaii, in order, all finished ahead of it.
