At least several cyclists have been hospitalized with severe injuries in so-called "dooring" incidents.

During the East Bay Bike Party's regular ride last week, cyclists were intentionally targeted by drivers. "Basically, these people in their car were using their car and the car door to attack people on the bicycle," said Charlotte Hryse, a volunteer organizer with the group.

Hryse told KCBS Radio these "dooring" attacks threw several people from their bikes and two people were hospitalized with serious injuries.

"Make no mistake — these were violent, targeted attacks with cars used as literal weapons," East Bay Bike Party wrote in a tweet on Sunday. "Last night was another frightening reminder that local governments must take immediate action to make the streets safe for everyone."

Hryse admitted the large bike party rides often conflict with motorists, but she's left scratching her head as to a motive.

"They chose to get their thrills on Friday night through acts of terrorism? You know, I can't empathize with that," she said.

The Oakland Police Department is investigating one of the incidents near the Rockridge BART station last Friday night. "Dooring" attacks have also been reported to Berkeley and Emeryville police. The East Bay Bike Party said at least two different vehicles appear to have been used in the attacks, which occurred several hours apart in different locations.
