East Bay Regional Parks workers are voting this week whether to go on strike for the first in almost 50 years due to low wages, the People for East Bay Park Workers announced on Monday.

The union cited that park workers are subject to 10% less pay than what others who work the same jobs make throughout the region.

To avoid the work stoppage, the union called on the East Bay Regional Park District Board to call a special meeting this week to change conditions.

"We depend on our 600 East Bay Park workers to keep our 73 parks clean, safe, and open for everyone," the union wrote in a statement. "They protect our families, clean water, and wildlife habitat, and they help prevent wildfires."

They encouraged residents around the Bay Area to email the board in support of its workers and demand fair salaries.

East Bay Regional Parks a system of parklands and trails "in Alameda and Contra Costa counties to the east of San Francisco," according to its website. It comprises nearly 125,000 acres at over 73 parks with 1,250 miles of trails.
