Electric car company Ayro to help with mobile vaccine distribution

From food trucks to mobile vaccine clinics, one electric car company is working to contribute to the vaccine distribution effort.

Scott Mellon with Texas-based electric vehicle maker Ayro on Tuesday showed off one of the company’s recent creations - the Electric Vaccine Vehicle.

Made with the same powerful batteries that keep the company’s electric food trucks rolling, Mellon said the cars are capable of powering the extremely cold freezer needed for vaccine distribution, operating for 6-8 hours on one charge.

“When you’ve got vaccines on site, you don’t want to lose power,” Mellon said. “You don’t ever want to throw out vaccines or have vaccines go bad.”

Mellon pointed out that even with mass vaccination sites up and running, many communities lack the mobility or the time to make the trip and some are getting left behind.

“We’ve got a tool now where you can say ‘hey, we’re coming to you, we’ll bring this to you,’” Mellon said. “So that was how the idea and the concept came together.”

Mellon added that the company is currently in talks with city officials around the Bay Area and elsewhere to hopefully use the vehicles in the local distribution effort in the near future.
