22nd Avenue, between Noriega and Moraga, remains locked down following the fire Thursday morning and San Francisco Police officers as well as the fire department are still on the scene.
Residents of the area are able to get in and out, but otherwise, the block has been closed off. Five homes were evacuated, three of which are still red-tagged.
Crews continue to sift through the wreckage of the home that exploded.
"Indicators of an explosion, such as blown out windows of homes and cars in the immediate area are visible," said Lt. Jonathan Baxter with the San Francisco Fire Department. "The cause of this explosion and subsequent fire is under investigation."
Investigators are also looking at houses across the street, likely to get a full picture of the scale of impact that the explosion had.
The sounds of the explosion could be heard from blocks away Thursday morning.
Canine units at the scene uncovered the person who died, who has not yet been identified.
The District Attorney's Office as well as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the investigation.
Along with the deceased, one person was reported to be in serious condition after suffering burns and one firefighter was injured in the fire, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.
The Red Cross has been assisting with people displaced by the fire.
