On Monday afternoon, David Mora Rojas, 39, shot and killed his three children inside a church in the Arden Arcade area before shooting and killing himself, as previously reported by KCBS Radio.

Rojas was on a supervised visit with his children, Samantha Mora Gutierrez 10, Samarah Mora Gutierrez, 9, and Samia Mora Gutierrez, 13. The fifth victim was a chaperone present to supervise the visit, Nathaniel Kong, 59.

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, a call came in just after 5 p.m. from an employee of a church, located on the 2000 block of Wyda Way, reporting that a man had started shooting inside. The employee reportedly had been upstairs when he first heard the shots.

Deputies arrived on the scene just minutes after the call, and while shots were not heard, the incident was treated as an active shooter scene and commenced searching rooms.

Once inside, deputies located the five victims. Despite medical intervention, all were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The father had a history of erratic behavior prior to the incident. Just days earlier, he had been arrested in Merced County for resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and driving under the influence, according to reporting by The Sacramento Bee.

He'd also reportedly assaulted a Los Banos California Highway Patrol officer when he was arrested. "He was drunk and while they were arresting him or trying to he decided he wanted to fight and ended up with felony charges because he assaulted a CHP officer, causing injuries," Deputy Daryl Allen, a spokesman for the Merced County Sheriff's Office, told the paper.

The Merced County Sheriff's Office did not respond to KCBS Radio's request for comment at the time of publication.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Office detectives are asking anyone with information about the case to call (916) 874-5115 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP. Tip information may also be left anonymously at www.sacsheriff.com or by calling (916) 874-TIPS (8477).
