The Redwood City Fire Department – which also serves San Carlos – said in a Tuesday afternoon Facebook post that the cause of the crash at San Carlos Airport is being investigated.
Just before noon, a single-engine Cessna 120 took off as witnesses heard sputtering, according to retired KCBS Radio reporter Tim Ryan. The pilot turned sharply to the right while trying to return to the airport, crashing into the perimeter fence and a guardrail on Skyway Road.
The plane was destroyed in the crash, and the passenger and pilot were able to walk away. San Carlos Airport closed for about 30 minutes, and Redwood City fire officials told KRON that investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board and San Mateo County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.
Constructed at its current location in 1948, San Carlos Airport is a county-run, federally classified reliever airport for nearby San Francisco International Airport.
