The Mosquito Fire — burning in Placer County near OxBow Reservoir east of Foresthill — has grown to 6,807 acres in two days with 0% containment, CAL FIRE reported.
The blaze has shown extreme fire behavior, sending up a massive plume of smoke as it tears through tinder-dry vegetation.
Wednesday night into Thursday morning, the fire grew another 1,100 acres, threatening the historic Gold Rush town of Michigan Bluff. Several structures and at least 10 cars have been burned.
"This fire continues to give us a hard time," CAL FIRE assistant chief Michael Rufena told KCBS Radio. "We have multiple units on scene, roughly 600 firefighters with additional units responding into the Forest Hill area."
An evacuation order has been issued for residents in Placer County and El Dorado County. For specific zones, locals are advised to check the CAL FIRE website.
