The Los Angeles Health Department, along with the Centers for Disease Control, on Monday announced that a severely immunocompromised Los Angeles County resident, who was already hospitalized, died from the disease.

No other information, including the identity of the individual, was released.

Officials first reported the death on Thursday, however it was confirmed this week that it was due to monkeypox.

A CDC spokesperson did not immediately confirm to the Associated Press that this was the first U.S. death due to monkeypox.

Texas officials last month reported the death of a person who was diagnosed with monkeypox, however that case remains under investigation to determine the cause of death. That person was also severely immunocompromised.

Monkeypox cases have recently declined nationwide. California has recorded the most cases in the country, with over 4,300.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
