The death of Glide Memorial Church Co-Founder Janice Mirikitani has left San Francisco reeling.

To mark Marikitani’s passing, GLIDE held a silent vigil outside on Sunday.

The church was supposed to reopen for in-person services at 9 a.m. but the delta variant squashed that, so instead an altar was set up in front of the church with a poster of Miritkitani being signed by members of the congregation.

"It’s hard for so many people whose lives she’s touched," said Mayor London Breed. "She had a way of making you feel like you were important to her."

State Senator Scott Wiener called Miritkitani extraordinary.

"I had the honor of spending quite a bit of time with her through Glide and also personally," Wiener told KCBS Radio. "She was a combination of strength, compassion and love."

All agree that this is a huge loss. This was a vigil for church members.

A public memorial is being planned and will likely be held later this month.
