Google's proposed transit village in west San Jose has been the subject of controversy for years.

On Tuesday, the tech giant put forward a $200 million benefits package that it's hoping will sweeten the deal, providing hundreds of affordable housing units, job support, small business aid and help for the homeless.

The plan received a warm welcome from San Jose city leaders.

"We are grateful that through this partnership between the city, the community and Google, we have reached the place where we can all find great mutual benefits," said Mayor Sam Liccardo.

The package also received a thumbs up from community activist group Silicon Valley Rising, which was among the development's strongest critics.

"I think what we're seeing in this agreement is that Google has listened," explained Maria Noel, member of Silicon Valley Rising. "I'm really pleased to see that the agreement reflects the needs that so many of us have been lifting up for years."

She noted the proposal is the result of years of protests and organizing by the group, adding that they'll continue to watch the process closely as the plan moves toward final approval in the coming months.
