Southwest officials told KCBS Radio the flight encountered a "mechanical issue requiring review," but didn't elaborate further on the nature of the issue.

"The aircraft landed uneventfully and taxied to the gate, and the flight will be swapped to a different aircraft for the continuation of the trip," a Southwest spokesperson said. "As always, Safety is Southwest's unwavering priority, and we appreciate the support and patience of our Customers and Crew."

The plane – which took off at 9:26 a.m. on Monday for Maui's Kahului Airport – turned around over the Pacific Ocean just over 90 minutes into the trip, according to data provided by FlightAware.

Flight 1281 landed back at Oakland International Airport at 12:42 p.m.

The crew and passengers will board another plane for Maui.

When reached for comment, airport officials referred KCBS Radio to Southwest Airlines. The airline clarified the plane "does not have a panel missing from an engine," as was previously reported.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
