The shooting occurred at John W. Finney High School, located at 1347 Amador St., just before 9:30 a.m.
According to a police report, a suspect entered an empty field on the school's campus and fired at least one shot. When school staff heard the noise, the administration immediately put the summer program hosted at the school on lockdown.
Police responded to the scene and found evidence of a shooting, but could not locate the suspect, authorities said.
Out of an abundance of caution, school authorities kept the 418 summer school students on lockdown. Vallejo High School is also holding its summer school program at the John Finney Education Complex.
Students were released from the school at around 11:15 a.m.
There were no reported injuries to students, staff or those in the neighboring area.
Vallejo police identified the suspect as a Hispanic man, approximately 30 to 40 years old, around 5'8" with a stocky build. He was last seen wearing a baseball cap, a black puffy jacket, dark jeans and no shoes.
Summer school at John Finney Education Complex will continue as scheduled Thursday.
