In a candidate questionnaire to SF Parent Action last week, board member Ann Hsu said that some of the biggest challenges in educating Black and brown students are the "lack of family support," "unstable family environments" and "lack of parental encouragement to focus on or value learning."
Hsu was almost immediately subject to a wave of backlash on social media, as community members called her words ignorant, racially insensitive and perpetuating false ideas. Some even called for the board member to resign, questioning Hsu's ability to make decisions that impact students.
In a statement to Twitter, Hsu apologized, stating that she "misspoke."
"My statements reflected my own limited experiences and inherent biases," she said. "I made a mistake, and I am deeply sorry."
Moving forward, Hsu said she will be prioritizing and centering BIPOC voices in her work on the SF Board of Education through listening sessions and community outreach.
Hsu was appointed by Mayor London Breed to fill a vacancy after the recall of three board members in February. She is up for reelection in November.
