Retro gamers, rejoice!

A beloved Alameda arcade just reopened.

After closing its doors for 15 months because of the COVID-19 pandemic, High Scores Arcade finally reopened on June 19.

The retro arcade in Alameda is filled with lots of vintage video games, giving customers their fill of gaming nostalgia.

Arcade manager Jonathan Williams told KCBS Radio’s Matt Bigler on Thursday that the pandemic forced High Scores to permanently close its second location in Hayward.

Meg Livernoche, who co-owns the business with her husband, Shawn, said they narrowly made it out of the pandemic. A year of COVID-19 closures nearly bankrupted them, Shawn said.

With no income, the couple was forced to move out of the Bay Area to Sutter County. They now have to commute 2.5 hours in their RV to check in on the arcade.

Livernoche said their fans supported them with a GoFundMe campaign to keep the business afloat, allowing the arcade to reopen shortly after California lifted the vast majority of its coronavirus-related restrictions.

Masks are still required while playing games inside High Scores, at least through the end of summer.
